The IRS has released the 2027 federal income tax brackets. Rates still range from 10% to 37%, with higher income thresholds and standard deduction amounts. The new figures apply to the 2027 tax year, so most taxpayers will use them when they file their returns in 2028.
2027 federal income tax brackets
These thresholds apply to taxable income, after applicable deductions. The table covers single filers and married couples filing jointly. All amounts are in U.S. dollars.
| Marginal rate | Single filers | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | Up to $12,800 | Up to $25,600 |
| 12% | Over $12,800 | Over $25,600 |
| 22% | Over $52,025 | Over $104,050 |
| 24% | Over $109,125 | Over $218,250 |
| 32% | Over $208,325 | Over $416,650 |
| 35% | Over $264,550 | Over $529,100 |
| 37% | Over $661,375 | Over $793,650 |
Each rate applies to the portion of taxable income within its bracket, up to the next threshold. Heads of household and married people filing separately can find their brackets in the full IRS schedules linked below.
What is the standard deduction for 2027?
The standard deduction reduces the income used to calculate federal income tax. The IRS announced these amounts for 2027:
| Filing status | Standard deduction |
|---|---|
| Single | $16,600 |
| Married filing separately | $16,600 |
| Head of household | $24,925 |
| Married filing jointly | $33,200 |
For married couples filing jointly, that’s $1,000 more than in 2026.
What happens when you move into the 22% bracket?
Say you’re single and have $55,000 in taxable income in 2027. The 22% bracket starts above $52,025, so $2,975 of your income falls into that bracket. The earlier portions are taxed at 10% and 12%.
When you use the table, start with your tax year, filing status, and taxable income. That tells you which rate applies to your last dollar of taxable income. Your effective rate reflects the tax across all your brackets. State income tax, where applicable, is calculated separately.
