During a routine expedition in the Weddell Sea, the crew of the icebreaker Polarstern made a discovery worthy of an adventure novel: an island of rock and ice completely absent from official records. Between mapping errors and satellite mysteries, this small piece of land is about to make its official entry into world geography.
An “Iceberg” That Wasn’t
It all began on February 8, 2026, in the heart of an international expedition of 93 people exploring the northwestern Weddell Sea. While the crew of the Polarstern, a vessel from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), was seeking shelter near Joinville Island to escape difficult weather conditions, an unusual relief caught their attention.
“Looking out the window, we saw an ‘iceberg’ that looked kind of dirty,” explains Simon Dreutter, a specialist in underwater mapping. “On closer inspection, we realized that it was probably rock.” After changing course to get closer, the evidence became clear: an island stood before them.
Secrets of a Phantom Territory
The island, now systematically studied, has modest but significant dimensions:

Width: 50 meters (about twice the width of the Polarstern).

Altitude: It rises 16 meters out of the water.
The most surprising fact remains its absence from modern geographical databases. Although the area was marked as a “zone with unexplored dangers to navigation” on certain nautical charts, the island did not appear on any coastline plots. Furthermore, its actual position is located about one nautical mile from where the danger was vaguely reported.
Why Didn’t the Satellite See It?
The technical explanation is simple: the island is covered in ice. On satellite images, its visual signature blended perfectly with that of the thousands of icebergs drifting in the region. Only a direct approach within 150 meters and the use of a multibeam echo sounder confirmed that it was a rocky formation attached to the seafloor.
A Name for History
The discovery is only the first step. Since there is no official international registration for this territory, the AWI team must now begin an official naming process. This is not a first for Dr. Boris Dorschel-Herr, head of bathymetry on board, who previously had two underwater mountains registered in 2014.
Once the name is validated, the precise coordinates will be published and integrated into international nautical charts, such as the IBCSO (International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean), to ensure future navigation safety in this perilous zone.
A Window into Climate Change
Beyond the geographical anecdote, this discovery is part of a context of rapid change. While Antarctica has long been considered stable, sea ice in this area has undergone a marked decline since 2017.
Scientists have observed an “Arctic-like” transition in the region, with unusual surface melting and the appearance of freshwater lenses under the ice. These phenomena directly influence global ocean currents and the survival of polar ecosystems. The study of this new island and its immediate environment will provide crucial data on the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean.
The adventure continues: The expedition is scheduled to end on April 9, 2026, in the Falkland Islands, before the Polarstern returns to its home port of Bremerhaven in May.
