Casper, the Pyrenees dog who defeated 11 coyotes and nearly died

For more than 30 minutes, in the middle of the night, almost no animal would have stood a chance.
Casper did.

A known threat before the attack

Casper is a Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog, and at the time, he was doing what he had been raised to do: protect a flock of sheep. The flock belonged to John Weirwill, a landscaping business owner who uses sheep for land maintenance.

In the days leading up to the incident, neighbors had already been sounding the alarm. Large packs of coyotes had been spotted repeatedly in the area, and the risk of an attack was growing by the day.

The attack on November 4, 2022

In the early morning hours of November 4, 2022, the threat became real.

Instead of staying close to the sheep, Casper made a split-second decision that likely saved them. He jumped a four-foot fence and went straight toward the coyotes, deliberately drawing them away from the flock.

A 30-minute fight against 11 coyotes

What followed was a brutal fight that lasted more than half an hour.
Casper faced eleven coyotes alone.

By the time it was over, eight coyotes had been killed, and the remaining three fled. When the dust settled, the outcome was almost unbelievable:
not a single sheep had been harmed.

Missing after the fight, then found severely wounded

After the battle, Casper disappeared. For two days, his owners feared the worst.

Then, unexpectedly, he returned. Casper was alive, but badly injured. Large patches of skin had been torn from his body, and part of his tail was gone.

Sixteen days of emergency care and multiple surgeries

Casper was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where he remained for 16 days. He underwent multiple surgeries, and veterinarians were forced to amputate his tail to save his life.

Once stabilized, he was transferred to another veterinary clinic to continue his recovery.

A community effort to cover his medical bills

The cost of Casper’s care was significant. In response, Lifeline Animal Project launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his medical expenses.

As his story spread, people rallied behind him. More than $15,000 was raised, fully covering the cost of his treatment.

An exceptionally rare case, according to experts

Animal behavior specialists say encounters of this scale are extremely rare, even among livestock guardian dogs bred for independent protection work. Fighting for that long, against that many predators, is almost unheard of.

Casper didn’t just defend a flock of sheep.
He pushed himself to the absolute limit of his strength and survived.
